Trawling

Trawling is when a massive net attached to a fishing boat is draged along the ocean. This catches huge amounts of fish but it also catches things that the fishermen dont want such as sea turtles, dolphins etc. It also destroys marine life because lots of marine species rely on coral reefs for food and protection. Bottom trawling nets also often take coral along with them destroying the reef and forcing fish that used to live there move (If they werent caught by the net). If something is caught that the fishermen don't want such a sea turtles or coral they just throw it back overboard. For turtles this may not be so bad but the coral die when picked up by a trawling net so when they are thrown back in they dont keep provideing food and protection for marine life. Trawling is one of the most commonly used fishing methods used on a large scale. There are different types of trawling such as midwater trawling to catch fish which don't dwell on the ocean floor but bottom trawling is the most destructive of all trawling.
